Kagami Biraki

Marubashi Dojo students:

As the holidays roll in and the year rolls out, we look onward toward renewed spirit and re-dedication to our training in 2016.  What better way to do so than with our brothers and sisters of Green Mountain Dojo at the Kagami Biraki training and celebration on Sunday, January 17 at 10:00 am in Montpelier, VT.  We will be training from 10:00AM to approximately noon followed by a potluck lunch.

What is Kagami Biraki?

The Kagami Biraki training and celebration is a custom observed by traditional dojo to officially kick off the New Year and represents a renewing of the spirit and rededication to training. In Japan, the New Year period is considered the most important time of the year, and ‘Kagami Biraki’ coincides with its celebration. The term ‘Kagami Biraki’ has different meanings. The literal translation for ‘Kagami’ is ‘Mirror’ and ‘Biraki’ means ‘Open’ or ‘Opening’. The mirror symbolizes the reflection of our true nature, the real self. The words themselves, “Kagami Biraki,” signify the unveiling or rather “breaking out,” of the mirror to reflect upon our character and actions of the previous year and to consider changes for further self improvement.

Please bring a favorite dish to share, but keep in mind that while the dojo has a microwave, it does not have a refrigerator.

We look forward to starting off the new year with strong collective good energy and powerful spirit!

Shinsa Conclusion and Congratulations!

Marubashi Dojo Kyokushin Karate sends a huge congratulations to the members of our Kyokushin community who endured this past Saturday’s shinsa testing at Green Mountain Dojo in Montpelier, VT.

Sosai Mas Oyama tells us that only with “tears and toil” are achievements truly worthwhile.  This five-hour shinsa was the conclusion of the shinsa that began in October, and encompassed all aspects of our Budo System.  The five students who were tested over the course of these two events displayed immense dedication, discipline, and spirit; boards were broken, limits pushed, and, as one student cheered on during hard-fought kumite, all was “left on the mat.”  We couldn’t be more proud to call Jesus, Joe, Alex, Ted and Sempai Nick our fellow karateka, and are fortunate to push and be pushed by them.

A special thanks Shihan Flynn, Sensei Flynn, Sensei Perez and Sensei Ratelle, as well as everyone and all the dojo’s who came far and wide to show their support.

Save the Date! – Vermont Summer Gasshuku Aug 1 & 2

Sensei Toni Flynn has announced the dates for Summer Gasshuku!

“The Green Mountain Dojo Vermont Summer Gasshuku will take place on August 1 and 2, 2015. Although we will send out a detailed package soon, we know that many people are awaiting confirmation of dates etc. for planning purposes.

A few things to take note of:

The venue is the same as last year; Crossett Brook Middle School in Duxbury/Waterbury VT.

Please book your accommodations as soon as possible. Summer is very busy and hotels book up very quickly.

Unfortunately, due to our recent dojo relocation, it will not be possible this year for people to stay at the dojo.

The cookout on Saturday evening will be in Morristown – about 20 – 25 minutes from Waterbury. Booking a hotel in Stowe or Waterbury would be best. Please contact me if you need some assistance.

Thank you.

Osu”
